This article focuses on the importance of mentoring for residents, describes the qualities of effective mentors, and offers suggestions for how young surgeons can make the transition from mentee to mentor.
Mentoring styles, with an emphasis on the mosaic model, are discussed in this article, along with recommendations for successful mentoring, guidelines for applying ACS values to the mentor/mentee relationship, and qualities mentees should exhibit to forge a mutually beneficial relationships with their role models.
An update on the College’s Transition to Practice Program in General Surgery is the focus of Dr. Hoyt’s column this month, including a closer look at two institutions currently pilot testing the program.
In response to concerns regarding the preparedness of newly trained surgeons and their ability to work independently, the College has established the ACS Transition to Practice (TTP) program. This article offers an overview of the challenges involved in developing this program and the process the ACS will use in approving training programs to serve as sites for the TTP program.

Over the last decade, a transformation has occurred in surgery. With rapid technological advances, changes in reimbursement, and modifications to resident training programs, strong leadership is needed to ensure future success.
