Highlights of the 2013 Clinical Congress are the focus of Dr. Hoyt’s column this month, particularly sessions that spotlight the College’s 100 years of Inspiring Quality. These sessions include the Martin Memorial Lecture sponsored by the American Urological Association and featuring historian David McCullough, and sessions titled Advances to the Care of Surgical Patients through Contributions of JACS and the BJS Centennial Report and Looking Back and Moving Forward: 100 Years of Surgical Research.

This month, Dr. Hoyt highlights the history and accomplishments of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS®) course and the affect the program has had in the U.S. and around the globe in providing standardized, high-quality trauma care.

This month, Dr. Hoyt highlights the importance of the joint congressional committee proposal to address the complex challenges of Medicare’s payment system as well as the College’s Value-Based Update plan which ideally will replace the flawed sustainable growth rate formula used to calculate reimbursement.

In his June column, Dr. Hoyt discusses a one-day strategic planning retreat for ACS Executive Staff. Attendees discussed the College’s two-year engagement with GE Healthcare and the launch of the Performance Improvement program, as well as future goals and objectives of each ACS Division to continue to move the organization forward.

In his latest column, Dr. Hoyt discusses Driven by Highest Standards, Better Outcomes: American College of Surgeons, a video that focuses largely on some of the College’s most prominent members and leaders. Driven is a reminder of the determination embodied in all members of the College to pursue and provide excellent surgical care.

Looking forward – November 2012

On Christmas Day 2008, John Pryor, MD, FACS, was killed by mortar shrapnel while serving as a combat surgeon in Mosul, Iraq. A dedicated trauma and military surgeon, Dr. Pryor devoted much of his career after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S. to serving his country. Many stories have been written about Dr. Pryor since his death, but perhaps no one is better able to tell his story than Dr. Pryor himself, and his brother Richard J. Pryor, MD, a retired emergency physician, has enabled him to do just that in a new book titled Alright, Let’s Call It a Draw: The Life of John Pryor. To write this unique book, Dr. Richard Pryor compiled his brother’s journal entries, his own memories, correspondence, and interviews to allow John Pryor to tell his own life’s story.
