College leaders answer the question, “Why is rural surgery an important issue now?”
The College’s Board of Regents has placed new emphasis on the issue of rural surgery, and with the Board’s support an Advisory Council for Rural Surgery was formed in June 2012. This column explores what motivated the ACS leadership to start focusing attention on this important issue now.

Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh honors ACS President Dr. A. Brent Eastman
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) awarded Honorary Fellowship to A. Brent Eastman, MD, FACS, President of the American College of Surgeons, at a diploma ceremony held in October at Scotland’s Edinburgh College.

A. Brent Eastman, MD, FACS, installed as 93rd ACS President
A. Brent Eastman, MD, FACS, a general, vascular, and trauma surgeon from San Diego, CA, was installed as the 93rd President of the American College of Surgeons during Convocation ceremonies on September 30. Two Vice-Presidents also took office during the Convocation: R. Phillip Burns, MD, FACS, of Chattanooga, TN, as First Vice-President and John M. Daly, MD, FACS, of Philadelphia, PA, as Second Vice-President.
