ACS Awards Six Resident Research Scholarships for 2022–2024

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has awarded six Resident Research Scholarships for 2022–2024. The scholarships are offered to encourage residents pursuing careers in academic surgery. This award offers $30,000 for each of 2 years, beginning July 1, 2022, and is supported by the Scholarship Endowment Fund of the College.

The recipients of these scholarships are:

  • Hanna Ficarino, MD, University of Alabama, Birmingham. Projected specialty: Colorectal/ trauma surgery. Research project title: Unplanned Healthcare, Self-Efficacy, and Quality of Life in Ostomy Patients: The Role of Health Literacy.
  • Yung Lee, MD, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON. Projected specialty: Minimally invasive surgery, bariatrics, and therapeutic endoscopy. Research project title: Effect of Bariatric surgery on Chronic renal Disease (BARICADE): A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial and Population-Based Study.
  • Norah Liang, MD, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. Projected specialty: Pediatric surgery. Research project title: Investigating the Role of Engrailed-1-positive Fibroblasts in the Foreign Body Response
  • Kevin Mangum, MD, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Projected specialty: Vascular surgery/genetic aortopathies. Research project title: JAK/STAT Regulation of Macrophage Mediated Inflammation in Diabetic Wound Repair.
  • Shannon Radomski, MD, The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. Projected specialty: Surgical oncology. Research project title: Investigating Intra Patient Inter Metastatic Drug Response Heterogeneity in Peritoneal Metastases from Gastrointestinal and Gynecologic Primary Cancers.
  • Winona Wu, MD, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA. Projected specialty: Vascular surgery. Research project title: Investigating the Role of MicroRNA-130b in Angiogenesis and Diabetic Critical Limb Ischemia.

The Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to provide income to fund scholarships and fellowships awarded by the Board of Regents. Direct contributions to support the Scholarship Endowment Fund are welcome.
