The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®) recognized 60 of 603 hospitals participating in the adult program for meritorious outcomes in surgical patient care in 2015. Participating hospitals track the outcomes of in- and outpatient surgical procedures and analyze the results. The hospitals were notified of this recognition through a poster announcement at the ACS Clinical Congress 2016. A list of the 60 hospitals is available on the ACS website.
The hospitals achieved this distinction based on their composite quality score, which is determined through a weighted formula combining outcome performances related to patient management in the following eight clinical areas:
- Mortality
- Cardiac: Cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction
- Pneumonia
- Unplanned intubation
- Ventilator less than 48 hours
- Renal failure
- Surgical site infection (SSI): superficial incisional SSI, deep incisional SSI, and organ/space SSI
- Urinary tract infection
Risk-adjusted data from the July 2016 ACS NSQIP Semiannual Report, which presents data from the 2015 calendar year, were used to determine the hospitals with meritorious outcomes.
