ACS K08/K23 awards will supplement NIH applications due October 12

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has announced a program for supplemental funding to individuals who receive a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08/K23). The NIH application deadline is October 12, 2012, with funding to begin July 1, 2013.  To apply for the K08/K23 supplemental program, submit a copy of the NIH application to the College.

This award, targeted to surgeon-scientists working in the early stages of their research careers, requires co-sponsorship with an approved surgical society of a three-, four-, or five-year period of supervised research experience that integrates didactic studies with laboratory or clinically based research.

By enhancing salary support beyond that offered by the K08/K23 mechanism,  this award program can facilitate the development of individuals pursuing careers in surgical research.

Awardees must be members in good standing of both the College and the cosponsoring surgical society.
